Abrasive Cutting System

Abrasive Jet

Above an abrasive water jet cutting through 1.5 inches (38mm) of steel plate.

The Abrasive Subsea Cutting system uses a high pressure jet of water/grit slurry to cut through steel up to 6” thickness. Its principle use here is in the severance of piles and structural tubular for the abandonment of offshore structures. Tubular piles of any diameter can be accommodated and it is usual to make the cut below the mudline so that there is no likelihood of pile stickup after abandonment.

Internal Cutting Manipulator (ICM) The Internal Cutting Manipulator shown left is inserted into the pile and lowered to the correct position. The arms, shown extended, are then activated to centralise and hold the tool in position. The abrasive slurry and hydraulic power for rotating the nozzle is fed to the tool via an umbilical from the surface. Time for a pile cut depends on the diameter and thickness but as an example a 54” dia X 2.5” w.t. is cut in 90mins. The tool also houses a monitoring system to provide cut verification.

Combined Abrasive Mier Unit and Grit Hopper

Right is an external manipulator for cutting through tubulars from the outside. Cutting is also performed on flat surfaces using tracking either fixed by divers or by ROV.

Left is a mixer and hopper for supplying the slurry to the manipulator. The mixer is located at the surface with the pump and supplies slurry at pressures up to 1000 bar and grit volumes of up to 3000 lbs per hour.
